About the Class
The Bayprofs/NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is our most regular class, and we have teaching and improving our curriculum since the early 1980s.
The Bayprofs/NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting curriculum focuses on firearm safety, firearm safety and we even take some time to talk about firearm safety. We then move to Ammunition and how it functions, the parts and function of revolvers, parts and functioning of semi-auto handguns, a primer on California firearms law, and the to the fundamentals of pistol shooting. After each section students are given time to go hands on, and the class ends with a 2-3 hour range session.
Class outline:
- Firearm Safety
- Ammunition types, function and storage
- Revolver types and function
- Semi-auto types and function
- California firearms law
- Fundamentals of Pistol shooting
- Range time
- Cleaning and maintenance
- Selecting a pistol
We gradually increase students comfort with firearms by starting small, but on the range you will have the opportunity to shoot a variety of popular calibers.
Details:
The class runs from 10:00AM to approximately 8:00PM. There is a full one hour lunch period and several breaks to help make the class time more enjoyable Please arrive at the range by 9:30 AM as the check in process can take some time.
We will take a one-hour break for lunch at about 1:00 PM. You may bring your own lunch or go to any of the eateries located within the general area. We will not take a specific dinner break so bring some snacks to keep your energy up, or alternatively, save some of your lunch. There will be water bottles provided, but please bring any snacks you might need.
Later in the day there will be a on-site range session for you to use all the skills and knowledge you will have learned in the class, while shooting at paper targets. We will provide the firearms, ammunition, targets, and safety equipment you will need.
Some of the firearms you will shoot will eject the cartridge that was just fired, during the reloading cycle. We recommend that you bring a brimmed hat (baseball style), a shirt or jacket that buttons or zips to the neck, and closed toed shoes (sneakers are OK).
Dress for outside temperatures on the day of class. The shooting range bays are the same temperature inside the building as the outside air. It can get quite cold or hot inside depending on the weather.
We provide all the firearms and ammunition necessary for the class and range session, however you may bring your own personally owned firearm to class if you have questions about it. Please let us know at check-in if you have a firearm. We would like the opportunity to examine the firearm, and we will store it at the front of the classroom during the lecture portion of the class. We will not be shooting any non-Bayprofs owned firearms during this class.
If you choose to bring your own firearm to class, then your gun must be transported unloaded and empty, in a locked case, not accessible to the driver or passengers while driving. This is to comply with the California State Penal Code. Do not transport loaded magazines or ammunition in the same case with the handgun. Put the ammunition in a separate container.
At the completion of the Basic Pistol class we will conduct a California Firearm Safety Certificate (FSC) class for those persons desiring to own a firearm. In California you must have an FSC (purchase permit) before you will be approved to purchase a firearm. The FSC requires an additional State fee of $25. If you are interested in taking the FSC, you can purchase a that during the online check out. They are also available during the class for the same price.
You are not required to take the FSC with us. You may take the test from any facility that offers it, at any time. However, our students generally pass the FSC with a score of 100%, due to the information they learned in our class.
Bayprofs also provides Chuck Michel’s book, California Gun Laws, included in the price of the course ($24.95 on Amazon.com). This book is an excellent reference on the confusing CA gun laws.
We offer a quantity discount for groups of 3 or more! Please purchase a FSC ticket for each person in your group that needs one.
IMPORTANT!
In the Basic Pistol class you will be handling and shooting a variety of firearms. Both State and Federal law make it unlawful for certain persons to own and/or possess (including handle) any firearm. These restrictions are many and constantly changing. BayProfs, Inc. is not a law firm. We cannot advise you as to your specific eligibility to handle the firearms in our classes. Please confirm your eligibility to handle firearms before signing up for class. .
