NRA Basic Muzzleloading

Bayprofs is very proud to present a NRA Basic Muzzleloading class. Muzzleloading classes that are open to the public are extremely rare. It has been multiple years of prep to allow for this class to be held.

The goal of this course to to provide an overview and hands-on live fire with modern reproductions of muzzleloading/black powder firearms that were common from approximately ~1700 until ~1870. We also cover modern muzzleloading firearms. This course does not assume any prior knowledge of firearms and is taught at a beginners level. We do not assume you own any muzzzleloading firearms. We will provide all needed firearms, components, and safety equipment for this class.

The course is held over two days to allow for enough time to cover all the material. We cover the use of muzzleloading rifles, pistols, and shotguns in a single course.

The class runs from 9:00AM to approximately 7:00PM. There is a full one hour lunch period and several breaks to help make the class time more enjoyable Please arrive at the range by 8:30 AM as the check in process can take some time.

We will take a one-hour break for lunch at about 1:00 PM. Please pack your own lunch. We will not take a specific dinner break so bring some snacks to keep your energy up, or alternatively, save some of your lunch. There will be water bottles provided, but please bring any snacks you might need.

The student can expect hands on with the following firearms types:

  • Flintlock single shot pistols
  • Percussion cap single shot pistols
  • Percussion cap revolvers
  • Flintlock rifles
  • Percussion cap sidelock rifles
  • Percussion cap modern inline rifles
  • Flintlock shotguns
  • Percussion cap sidelock shotguns

All firearms handling will be done one-on-one under the direct supervision of our certified instructors.

We provide all the firearms and ammunition necessary for the class and range session, however you may bring your own personally owned firearm to class if you have questions about it. Please let us know at check-in if you have a firearm. We would like the opportunity to examine the firearm, and we will store it at the front of the classroom during the lecture portion of the class. We will not be shooting any non-Bayprofs owned firearms during this class.

If you choose to bring your own firearm to class, then your gun must be transported unloaded and empty, in a locked case, not accessible to the driver or passengers while driving. This is to comply with the California State Penal Code. Please do not bring any powder, percussion caps, or projectiles to this class.

Students are required to bring the following materials to class:

  • Please bring a brimmed hat (baseball style), a shirt or jacket that buttons or zips to the neck, and closed toed shoes (sneakers are OK). Dress for outside temperatures on the day of class. The shooting range is outdoors. It can get quite cold or hot depending on the weather.
  • We highly recommend bringing sunscreen
  • The range has stools out by the range, but you might want to bring a camping chair to have something nicer to sit on during the downtimes while on the range
  • Pens/Pencil/paper for notes, filling out forms, and taking the written test
  • Please bring a packed lunch each day. We won’t have time to go off-site for lunch.
